2021 Scholarship

On May 1, 2021, the UGA Aviation Club hosted its inaugural Spring Fly-In to fund the club’s first student pilot scholarship. The scholarship application was open to all active club members enrolled at UGA. The club had a panel of three judges – Ron Cox, Katie Russell, and Jack Langner – to review applications to decide which qualified student shows true passion and commitment in their pursuit of their private pilot certificate.

With the help of generous donations, the club was able to award TWO student pilot scholarships. Our first-place winner, Drew Fiscus, was awarded $5,000 and a Private Pilot Checkride. Our second-place winner, Elyse Behrens, was awarded $4,000 and a Private Pilot Checkride. Our club is 100% student-run and funded by club members. Thus, our scholarship will allow us to continue to grow the aviation community at UGA alongside the club. We are thrilled to watch our recipients’ journeys as they begin their training. The club raised over $10,000 for these students and we will now be able to continue this scholarship program for years to come. Thank you to our donors for their generous contributions, the club members who volunteered and helped organize the event, The Flight School of Athens, for hosting our event, and to everyone who came out to support our mission!

At the Fly-In, we enjoyed corn hole, silent auction, food, music, and over 200 guests. We are so excited that this scholarship fund will provide a unique opportunity for a student pilot to earn their wings and look forward to bringing the aviation community together in years to come!

Drew has flew through his PPL training with his instructor, Weston Bell (UGA Aviation Club alum), and passed his checkride in March 2022! We can’t wait to watch Drew continue to pursue higher ratings and continue to grow his passion for aviation. Way to go Drew!
